6 Steps To A Healthy Self Image

March 21, 20233 min read

Do you ever catch yourself saying 'I AM tired', 'I AM not good enough', 'I AM not worthy of x', 'I AM stupid', 'I AM ugly', 'I AM lazy'....The list goes on....These negative 'I AM' statements are an example our self image.

Self-image refers to the way we see ourselves, both physically and mentally. It is a combination of our thoughts, feelings, and beliefs about ourselves. Unfortunately, many people struggle with negative self-image, which can lead to a lack of self-love and confidence.

Self love

If you are one of these people, it is important to know that you are not alone, and there are ways to overcome this hurdle. Instead of finding evidence that affirms your negative belief about yourself, you are going to pivot, focus on the positive beliefs about yourself, make improvements and changes that demonstrate you are actually AMAZING! Here are six effective ways to overcome self-image issues and cultivate self-love:

1. Practice self-compassion: Self-compassion involves being kind and understanding towards yourself, especially when you are struggling or facing challenges. Instead of criticising yourself for your flaws or mistakes, try to treat yourself with the same kindness and compassion you would offer a friend. This can help you to shift your mindset from self-criticism to self-love and acceptance.

2. Challenge negative self-talk: Negative self-talk is a common issue that can fuel negative self-image. When you catch yourself engaging in negative self-talk, such as "I'm not good enough" or "I'm too fat," challenge these thoughts by asking yourself if they are true. Often, these thoughts are not based on facts and can be challenged with more positive and realistic affirmations.

3. Focus on your strengths: When you have a negative self-image, it is easy to get caught up in your flaws and shortcomings. Instead, focus on your strengths and what makes you unique. Make a list of your positive qualities, skills, and achievements, and remind yourself of them regularly.

4. Practice self-care: Taking care of yourself physically, emotionally, and mentally can help to improve your self-image and cultivate self-love. This includes engaging in regular exercise, strength and cardio, getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and engaging in activities that bring you joy.

5. Practice improvements in your health + fitness: There is nothing more powerful than getting your body to do things you thought you weren't capable of! Add a discipline that makes you feel a sense of achievement and provides evidence to your 'doubting voice' that you are strong, capable and worthy!

6. Seek support: Overcoming self-image issues can be challenging, and it is important to seek support from others. This can include talking to friends and family members who are supportive, joining a support group, or seeking the help of a mental health professional. Having a supportive network can help you to feel less alone and provide you with the tools and resources you need to overcome negative self-image and cultivate self-love.

In conclusion, overcoming negative self-image and cultivating self-love is a journey that takes time and effort. By practicing self-compassion, challenging negative self-talk, focusing on your strengths, practicing self-care, and seeking support, you can begin to shift your mindset and develop a more positive self-image. Remember, you are worthy of love and acceptance, and with time and effort, you can learn to love and accept yourself just as you are.
